How it works
This calculator helps you determine if purchasing a Japan Rail (JR) Pass is financially beneficial for your trip. Please note: This tool requires you to manually input the estimated total cost of your train tickets. It does not automatically calculate routes between cities.
To use the tool, sum up the individual ticket prices for your planned Shinkansen (bullet train) and long-distance JR trips using a service like Google Maps or Japan Transit Planner. Enter that total, along with the current price of the JR Pass you plan to buy, to see if the pass will save you money.

- Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen (One-way): ~¥14,000
- Kyoto to Tokyo Shinkansen (Return): ~¥14,000
- Local JR travel in Tokyo/Kyoto: ~¥2,000
Total Individual Cost: ¥30,000
7-Day JR Pass Cost: ¥50,000
Verdict: Individual tickets are ¥20,000 cheaper. The JR Pass is not worth it for this itinerary.
FAQ
Does this tool calculate train fares automatically?
No, this is a manual comparator. You need to look up the fares for your planned routes beforehand and enter the total sum into the calculator.
Does the JR Pass cover all trains in Japan?
No. The JR Pass only covers trains operated by the Japan Railways (JR) Group. It does not cover private railways (like Hankyu, Keihan, Odakyu), city subways, or the fastest Nozomi/Mizuho Shinkansen trains without an expensive supplement ticket.
Did the JR Pass price increase?
Yes, in October 2023, the price of the nationwide JR Pass increased significantly (by about 70%). As a result, it is now much harder to make the pass 'pay off' unless you are doing extensive long-distance travel across multiple regions.
