How it works
A filter's efficiency is often judged by its "Turnover Rate," which is how many times the total volume of your aquarium water passes through the filter in one hour. Enter your tank volume and your filter's stated flow rate (check the box or sticker on the pump). The calculator will divide the flow rate by the tank volume to give you a multiplier.
Example
Scenario: You have a 100 Liter aquarium and just bought a canister filter rated for 600 L/h.
- Calculation: 600 L/h ÷ 100 L = 6.
Verdict: Your turnover rate is 6x per hour. This is an excellent moderate flow rate suitable for almost any standard community fish tank.
FAQ
Is the manufacturer's flow rate accurate?
No. The flow rate printed on the box is usually the pump's absolute maximum output with zero filter media (sponges, ceramics) inside and zero head height. Once you fill it with media and connect the hoses, the actual flow rate will drop by 30% to 50%.
Can I have too much filtration?
You cannot have too much biological filtration (beneficial bacteria), but you CAN have too much water flow. If small fish are being blown around the tank and cannot rest, the flow rate is too high. You may need to use a spray bar to disperse the current.
